The students will start coming this weekend!! Isn’t that exciting? We are ready for the two weeks ahead! The freshers crew are all getting together and we are anxiously waiting for all of you to arrive! We have exciting things prepared for you so be ready to get involved and have fun!

Meanwhile, I had some meetings with the University, so we can find ways of accommodating you the best way possible. The University runs a number of workshops all the students will find useful, about getting started with assignments, how to find information for your assignment, effective reading, avoiding plagiarism, etc. The workshops run throughout the year and any student should find them useful. It might get a bit overwhelming as everything is different from what you have done so far, and the workshops are there to help you improve your academic skills! Don’t be afraid to attend, they are all FREE, and don’t be afraid to ask if you find yourself in difficulty. You can ask either me, so I can give you an answer or direct you to the right people who are fully qualified to help you, or you can ask the Study Support Department who are there to give you support with your studies!

You can find more information about the Student Support services here.

The workshops list can be downloaded from here: Study Support Workshop Programme 20010_2011. You can also get it along with other useful information from your Blackboard, under the Student Support tab.

Did you know that you are most probably entitled to free health costs? That means free prescriptions, free glasses, etc. All you need to do if fill in a form, which you can pick up from my office! You will probably need to go to see a GP at least once while you are here at Uni, so why pay £7.10 for your prescription when you can get it for free? Come and pick up a form!

If you think you might have a disability such as dyslexia, or you would like to be screened, please go on this website and contact the department. It is better to know from the beginning, rather than struggling on your own. There is a lot of help out there that the University gives or that the Students’ Union gives. All you need to do is ask!

My door is always open for one-to-one sessions, so if you have any questions or concerns come in my office (Ug02, first thing on the right in the Students’ Union) or email me at silvia.rasca@canterbury.ac.uk
