Every year thousands of students move between houses or away from Canterbury over the same couple of weeks at the end of June and start of July when housing contracts end. Few students have cars to take waste to the tip and Canterbury has fortnightly waste collections. As a result of all these things, areas around the universities sometimes suffer from an excessive amount of rubbish on the streets – this causes bad feeling between the student population and other residents. Canterbury’s environment also suffers as a lot of useful stuff ends up going to landfill.
