Varsity

Established in 1999, Varsity was born to showcase the best of University sport within the local community. This year was no different. With the overall score of UKC 21: CCCU 13, the University of Kent triumphed this year but all of the teams who competed played very well. All of the fixtures were well attended and Canterbury saw hundreds of students supporting their university in navy and maroon T-Shirts.

Some of the scores were brilliant, for example: CCCU Men’s Volleyball beat UKC 3:0, Netball 3’s won by 10 points and the biggest point difference going to CCCU’s Women’s Rugby 1’s who beat UKC 44:0! Some other CCCU teams who won their fixtures were Women’s Hockey 2s, Men’s Football 2s, and Women’s Football 1s. Both universities promoted Friendship, Pride and Passion throughout the event.

Fundraising

Hundreds of CCCU students have been involved with fundraising with the total since September reaching approximately £6000 supporting charities such as Childreach International, East African Playgrounds, the FutureSense Foundation and many more!

The fundraising events include a Ladies Night at The Lounge & a 24 hour Cycle which raised a collective total of £947.91 for Make-A-Wish, Action Against Hunger & Worldwide Cancer Research!

The students who fundraise, take part in a charity challenge, organised by a company who is affiliated to a charity. Each student who takes part has a target total of approximately £3000 to raise. This money goes to the charity and also in part funds the charity challenge trip. For example, the students are hoping to take part in a volunteering trek to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro with the organisation Challenges Abroad who are affiliated to the FutureSense Foundation. A massive well done to all the students involved with fundraising so far this year!

Elections

Every year the Students’ Union runs elections to elect its full-time officers. After over a week of campaigning and voting, students gathered in The Lounge on 13th March for the results evening. The elections process was successful and with just under 2000 students casting a total of 6956 votes the new Leadership team was elected.

The new Leadership Team for 2015/16 will take office in July 2015. Click here to read the team’s manifestos.

Student Activities Awards

http://ccsu.co.uk/asset/News/6013/saa.jpgThe Student Activities Awards Ceremony was organised by Sophie Dudley (President: Student Activities) on 12th March in Augustine Hall to honour the achievements of societies, volunteers, student representatives and fundraisers. Some of the awards presented were: ‘Best New Society’, ‘Most Improved Society’ and ‘Best Fundraising Event’.

The ‘Society of the Year’ award was given to the Dance society. This academic year, the Dance Society recruited a record number of society members, raised £250 by putting on a charity performance as well as organising a ‘Danceathon’ fundraiser where students could join in with various workshops and freestyle sessions over a 24hour period.

The award for ‘Most Dedicated Student to Fundraising’ went to Zoe Harrison who went ‘above and beyond’ for charity this year. She has shown a great deal of passion and enthusiasm for organising and executing events including the 24hour Cycle and the Pole Fitness takeover at The Lounge.

The Feminist Society won the extremely competitive category: ‘Best New Society’. The Feminist Society has worked really hard this year on making our students think through their emotive and interesting campaigns. The ceremony went really well, and was a brilliant way to celebrate the achievements of all those who attended.
