The Students’ Union co-ordinates a wide range of sports teams and activities and offer an extensive programme of sport and recreational opportunities at every sporting level for all members of the University.
The Sports Federation offers many different sports ranging from your more traditional activities such as Rugby, Football, Hockey and Netball right through to American Football, Snowsports and Equestrian. The Union is always open to and supportive of starting up new clubs too.
Most of the sports clubs compete in either BUCS (British University & Colleges Sport) or SESSA (Southern England Student Sports Association) on Wednesday afternoons either at home or travelling away to other universities. However the pinnacle of the sporting calendar at Christ Church is the annual Varsity event in which the teams take on bitter local rivals University of Kent at their sport all in one week.
A key element of being a member of a sport at Christ Church is the social aspect. Wednesday nights see the teams donning a whole host of fancy dress outfits as they celebrate or commiserate the day’s results in the Student Union Bar.
Rounding up the sporting year is the Sports Federation Dinner which celebrates the year’s successes both on a team and individual basis. For many, the highlight of the sporting calendar falls towards the latter stage of the year in April which sees the majority of the sports teams head abroad to different European destinations to university sports festivals such as SalouFest to compete against other British Universities at their sport.
