The Hurricane Review
This is the film which should have won Denzel Washington his Best Actor Oscar. Washington portrays Rubin ‘The Hurricane’ Carter, an American Middleweight boxer who was wrongly accused of murder and wrongly imprisoned for 20 years. Before you think I’ve ruined the film for you, it’s all based on true events.
The film takes you deep into the unstable mindset of The Hurricane, and shows the bond he makes with a young male (Vicellous Reon Shannon), and his Canadian teachers, and their fight against a racist establishment profiting on Carter being imprisoned.
Denzel Washington’s depiction of the Hurricane really is something memorable. Washington is perfectly suited to this role, and his brand of charismatic integrity and predictably profound, barnstorming monologues really make you believe every single word spoken is true. This is a skill Washington brings to each role he plays; the sense that he is the character, and not just an actor.
This film really should just be looked at as a good piece of cinema rather than a bible of the events. All the events have been taken directly from Rubin Carter’s memoirs, so it is a very one sided view, but if you can push all of that to the side, you will no doubt enjoy this emotional story.
