‘Carnage’ hits the City of Canterbury
Pub crawls for first year freshers is condemned in the local and national press
Carnage, the UK’s most well known student night out returned to Canterbury last month. Hundreds of students flocked from bar to bar around the town, just having time for a couple of drinks before being moved on to the next venue.
Carnage is notoriously known to be the night where students get drunk, dress inappropriately and disrupt the town. After the media have been disgusted by how students have acted on Carnage in recent weeks, the question is how far is this ‘drunken student’ stereotype true?
Organised through a national company, students partake in a bar crawl through the city, ending up in a local nightclub. Usually the night goes without complaints, but this time, many students found their possessions missing as they left the club in the early hours of the morning. A local student explains “Many of my friends actually had their phones and wallets stolen, I think people get so drunk that they do not look after their possessions as they would on a normal night out.”
However, many people disagree with the way people view Carnage, student Sarah Patten says “I think its a good idea because it is something a bit different in Canterbury, this town has a very boring nightlife. They also take us to very expensive bars so it is hard to get drunk without spending a lot of money. We are poor students.”
Roger Vick, Canterbury City Council Health and WelfareOfficer was left unhappy with how the night turned out, “It was badly dealt with, all of the stewards were standing around in big groups, that is the problem with having students stewarding, they do not really care.”
Just six members of Carnage staff led students around; all of the other volunteers were students themselves. When asked why he chose to be a steward rather than taking part in Carnage himself, Jack Ridgeway commented “You get some free alcohol.” Incentives are put in place for students to want to be stewards for the evening. The police have also issued a statement saying that the night went without any problems as far as they are concerned.
Carnage will continue in early November when the theme will be ‘Beauty and the geek’.
