Re: November/December issue of Unified

In the November/December issue of Unified, the newspaper included the article entitled ‘The mother of all money problems’, printed on page 9 in the ‘Finance’ section of the issue. Unified acknowledges that the subject and concerns raised in the article were that of one individual, and do not reflect the opinions of every student at CCCU.

We would also like to apologise for any offence caused within the article, and recognise that in the current financial climate, Canterbury Christ Church University has helped many students who have not yet received their loans and have been struggling to cope with the financial pressures of university life. In the months of October and November, CCCU assisted 70 of these students, loaning out a total of £26, 500 out of their own funds. Again, with the recession that has hit the country, and the amount that CCCU has invested into ventures such as Augustine House in recent years, to be able to loan out a sum of this amount is admirable and demonstrates that the university does have it’s students wellbeing at heart.

In addition, it should also be recognised that the staff in the Student Advisers (Financial Support Team) have been committed to helping students in financial difficulty and their efforts in this respect are fully acknowledged. Many students have only had the financial support to stay at university because of their hard work and dedication to helping at this difficult time.

Is a student newspaper really the place to launch personal attacks on people??
How unprofessional, obviously we’re not yet beyond this child-like mentality of slagging people off.
Shame, this paper would make a good read and be a lot more popular if it wasn’t so petty and taken so seriously,it’s a pity some people have to ruin it for others.
Of course Unified is written with the intention to cause a bit of controversy (and is supposed to be an outlet for ANY student’s views), but doesn’t this take it a bit too far? In my opinion it’s just an abuse of power, and certainly reflects poorly on the author, not a good start for a wannabe journalist!!

With respect, this is a very serious subject which is still effecting thousands of students through out the UK.

This subject is in no way petty and is very current.

I am unsure how “BS” felt their comment was relevent.

The majority of students are very concerned indeed with financial matters. This particular artical may have caused controversy, but it was frank and honest whilst highlighting the issue.

Unfortunately, in the real world, it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time.

The author of this article recognises this. An admirable trait of a budding journalist who, in my opinion, will go far!

It’s just a shame that “BS” doesn’t have the same conviction in their opinions! leave your name next time!
