DVD Review - Gamer
In a future not so far away, an online game has become a way of life for millions of people around the globe. “Society” gives you the power to control other people. You can live a life through them by giving computer commands. They say and do whatever you want them to. You just need enough money to “buy” such people. Sounds crazy? Then check the newest game – “Slayers”. Just imagine Counter Strike but with real people. Based on the same principle as “Society” you play in front of your computer by controlling a real person in the bloodiest game ever where people die for real.
Cable (Gerard Butler) has become the ultimate celebrity of the future. He is a prisoner fighting for his life and freedom in “Slayers”. Cable (controlled by Simon) is the first player who has survived 28 battles and there are only two more to win in order to regain his freedom. His life has been destroyed by the inventor of the games and he has to find a way back to reality and back to his family.
If you dig deeper under the surface of Gamer and put aside the obvious topics – degradation of society and the danger of the rush technological progress, you might get terrified by the fact that this science-fiction film does not look so science-fictional at all. Of course there are some mind blowing special effects too. But after the whole world went crazy about “Second Life” the movie shows us the natural development of today’s “internet society”. In the end we might not have come very far in evolution. Give people bread and circuses as the old saying says.
