DVD Review - The Soloist

An uninspired journalist with many personal and professional problems is looking for a new sensational story that is going to put his career back on track. As often happens in life, the next story is right around the corner. You just have to look around and find it!

The Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) thinks he’s hit the jackpot when he meets Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx) – a homeless, mentally ill person who claims he is a former student of The Juilliard School of Arts. There is no doubt in Nathaniel’s remarkable talent. He can play many instruments with such easiness and passion that you can get goose-flesh when you are listening to his performances. Steve starts writing about the street musician in his column and Nathaniel’s sad story touches the hearts of many readers. The journalist even gives Nathaniel his favourite instrument the cello as a gift knowing that this will make him happier than all the money in the world. But when Steve tries to help the homeless man with money and an apartment Nathaniel becomes aggressive. Everybody starts wondering how such talented man ended up on the streets?

Those of you who have seen ‘Resurrecting the Champ’ might find some similarities in the story line but ‘The Soloist’ has a very different perspective and a totally unexpected end (at least for me).

Both Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. definitely deserve Oscar nominations.
