A Fine Lot of Artists

With exam season in full swing, some of you may be crying out for a break from your books and a chance to do something different, which is where the university’s Fine and Applied Arts students come in. This year’s BA graduates from the department will be showing their work in the Sidney Cooper Gallery, which the public can view from 29th May to 10th June, and entry is completely free (making it even more desirable for students).

The Degree Show incorporates many different mediums of art, so there really is something for everyone, with printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, painting and drawing all included in the mix; styles can range from traditional portraiture to abstraction. As a current graduate of the course myself, I can safely say that students have put in a lot of time, creativity and effort to produce the work on display. My own work has been inspired by derelict buildings, black and white photographs and fashion advertising, which led me to produce a series of prints and drawings during a year-long project, whilst other students have been influenced by interiors, local landscape and colour combinations. You don’t need to be a certified ‘art lover’ to appreciate what’s on show – visitors certainly won’t be disappointed if this is their first visit to an art gallery or their tenth – but just bring an open mind and have a look around.

The Sidney Cooper Gallery is located at 22-23 St. Peter’s Street (near Nando’s and the Westgate Towers), making it very central for CCCU students, so why not visit us when you’re next in town?

Opening times: Tuesday – Friday: 11am – 5:30pm, Saturday: 12pm – 5:30pm (Closed Sunday and Monday).
