Sports & Society Statements - Feb 2021

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the associated restrictions in place we've had to make some tough decisions with regards to the large scale sports and society events that traditionally take place in the spring, namely Canterbury Varsity, Sports Federation Awards, Student Community Awards, and Sports Tours.

We know how much our students look forward to these events each year and we hope you can understand the reasons behind the following decisions.

Canterbury Varsity 2021

Christ Church Students’ Union and Kent Union, with the support of Christ Church Sport & Active Health and Kent Sport, have taken the decision to cancel the 2021 Canterbury Varsity Event that historically takes place between Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) and the University of Kent (UoK).

We know how important the Varsity event is to all of you as Sports Club members, Society members and the wider student community as a whole; however, we feel this is absolutely necessary in order to protect the health of students and staff, and is the only viable course of action considering the likelihood of continued restrictions on social distancing over the remaining part of winter and into the spring.

Sports Federation Awards & Student Community Awards 2021

After the careful consideration of a number of factors including the longevity of the pandemic, ongoing safety concerns and the inability for the events to take place in a viable format, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 physical ceremonies for both events.

As with the reasoning behind this decision for the 19/20 awards, it is still incredibly important for us to both celebrate the successes and to recognise the achievements of our student group members for this academic year. However we also appreciate that this year has been unique in relation to what activity has actually taken place and that as a result the format of the awards may need to adapt accordingly for this academic year.

We will still be holding virtual events to ensure that this can still take place. However we need to do further work as a Union in consultation with the relevant Executive Committees and Student Group leaders as a whole in order to determine how best to structure these awards ceremonies.

Sports Club Tour Policy 2021

Taking into account the nature of Sports Club Tours, the historical stance of the Union with regards to this and the developments of circumstances arising from the ongoing Coronavirus situation, we will be strongly advising student Sports Club members not to organise any form of tour activity this academic year.
