Maddy Young

Hello my name is Maddy Young,

I am the current CCSU President (Sports and Engagement), and I am running for re-election to be your new President (Engagement and Sports) 2021/22.

This certainly has been a year I will never forget. It has not been an easy journey at all. However throughout the year I have continued to stay dedicated, committed and hardworking whilst also being as positive but as realistic as possible for our incredible student community, who have pulled together and worked incredibly hard with us.

The next step is to rebuild our physical community in order to come back, bigger, better and stronger than ever!

Please see my Manifesto points below:

Engagement:

I want to widen and enhance the Union's Engagement. The ways I intend to do this are:

  • The relaunch of Union on tour, to reach students who are not already engaged with the union and raise awareness of the services we offer the unengaged on the campuses.

  • Work with the President (Campaigns and Societies) on the More for Medway campaigning, making it even bigger and better.

  • Ensure more of a presence for our wider student community by hosting drop ins for students, both at the Canterbury and Medway campuses.

  • Continue building on the huge progress we have made on developing the relationship between societies and sports teams. I will continue to have a close working relationship with the new President (Campaigns and Societies) to ensure the cohesion between the communities continues to grow.

  • I want to focus on widening participation in sport, making it more accessible both financially and physically to all students.

  • I will make inclusion training for committee members compulsory, including training on trans and non-binary inclusion, unconscious bias and disability awareness.

  • Continue to work with the university and timetabling team to ensure that Wednesday afternoons are kept free for students to engage with extra-curricular activity.

Sport:

It is going to be especially important to rebuild the Team Christ Church community after the year we have had. It is vital we get teams back training once the government guidance and the national governing bodies allow it, in order for our community to flourish to the best of its ability.

  • I will continue my work with Christ Church Sport and Active Health to make the sporting membership model as accessible as possible. This will include lobbying the university for extra funding.

  • Ensure comprehensive training for our 2021/22 committees, to ensure they feel prepared for the new academic year.

  • Continue to host regular committee meets and drop ins, so that I am available to listen and assist them.

  • Work to make sure that all of the playing and training facilities are up to the highest standard, and that, Polo Farm is used to its full potential.

  • I will ensure I am in regular communication with BUCS to allow a smooth running of club sport.

Wellbeing:

This year improving the mental health of our students is more crucial than ever before. I am a strong believer in the importance of physical activity and the proven benefits it can have for your mental health. The ways I intended to do this are:

  • Creating a ‘Move for Minds’ campaign, focused on getting people active to help improve their mental health.

  • I will work closely with the President (Community, diversity and inclusion) and the University wellbeing team to provide as much support as possible for students' wellbeing.

Throughout this year, I have worked hard to make sure that our students have the best experience possible. I am so passionate about this role and have so much more I want to achieve for the student community.
