What does a Sabbatical Officer do?

What does a Sabbatical Officer do?

Nicola Ward

I’m still asking myself this question!

Being a sabbatical officer is a role unlike any other. From attending meetings with the university, to interacting with students, to planning and running campaigns. No two days are the same.

The best way to tell you about my job, is to tell you what I have done so far for you. Since officially starting my role, I have;

  • Arranged the Sexual Health Clinic on campus, which provides a private and confidential service for students.

  • Given many lecture shout-outs to 1st year students to raise awareness of what the Students’ Union can do for you.

  • Attended meetings with university staff, speaking for and representing students on matters including online assessment and feedback, more online resources from the library and the cost of printing (when you already pay £9000).

  • Attended Broadstairs, Canterbury and Medway Freshers’ Fayre, meeting many friendly faces along the way.

  • Hosting the weekly Quiz in The Lounge.

What am I working on now?

In the next couple of months I will be working on my manifesto ensuring issues that students face every year, such as timetabling issues, room bookings and sufficient library resources are taken seriously within the university, and ensuring students voices are heard. After all, it is your university!

I am starting to plan my main project of the year, which is a graduation booklet for those 3rd year students, that are sadly leaving us, but are still a part of Christ Church.

I will also be looking into and running campaigns on issues such as Alcohol Awareness and Housing. So keep a watch out!
