  • Independent Monitoring Boards logo

    Independent Monitoring Boards

Independent Monitoring Board members are the eyes and ears of the public, appointed by ministers to perform a vital task: independent monitoring of prisons and immigration detention.

Volunteering is a wonderful way for your employees to step out of their normal working environment and try something different, learn new skills, enhance their talents and help the community.

If your company has a volunteer programme, or is looking to give back to the local community by setting one up, then please read on.

We are looking for volunteers for a role which provides insight into a world that few people see.  Our members are a team of ordinary people doing an extraordinary role: independent monitors in prisons and immigration detention. All our members are unpaid public appointees, appointed by Ministers.

Once appointed, our members have unrestricted access to the facility they monitor and can talk to any prisoner or detained person, out of sight and hearing of members

This provides an opportunity to report on whether individuals are being treated fairly and humanely and whether prisoners are being given the support they need to turn their lives around.

We are looking for people who share our values and commitment and are keen to give back to their community. A person will need to: be a good listener; always act with integrity; be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion; be able to analyse observed events and behaviour, make decisions and apply common sense. They will also need to work within a team, be a good communicator and have basic computer skills.

Above all we are looking for people with a non-judgemental and open-minded approach.

Although this is an unpaid role, we pay travel and subsistence expenses, childcare/carer costs and, in certain circumstances, contributions towards loss of earnings.

Introduction to the Rising Sun Domestic Violence & Abuse Service

Rising Sun is a charity in Kent working to end domestic abuse and improve the lives of survivors and their children suffering from its effects.  We have an ambitious vision for a world in which women and children live free from actual or threatened domestic abuse and all forms of violence.

Established in 1978, we represent, campaign for, and support the delivery of specialist domestic abuse and prevention of violence against women and girls services in Kent, as part of a UK network.

We have been at the forefront of shaping coordinated community responses and practice in Kent, by campaigning for change and providing advice, support and training to deliver programmes and services for survivors, families and communities.

As a part of the Women’s Aid national federation, we ground our work and campaigning, as well as our training and advocacy, in delivering our local specialist services. We found our success on making sure the experiences and needs of survivors are central to all we do.

Rising Sun provides an integrated and holistic service addressing the needs of survivors and their children from the point of crisis through recovery and onto independent lives. Our key underlying principle is to work holistically alongside survivors in their recovery from the trauma they have experienced; helping to build resources through a strengths-based approach so that survivors are able to build safe and independent futures.

  • Together Talks! logo

    Together Talks!

Together Talks is a telephone befriender service which aims to alleviate loneliness and isolation within Bradford by using volunteers from across the country.

About Together Talks (Flexible and remote volunteering)

Together Talks Telephone Befriending Service is looking for people who would like to join us in helping to provide support to as many people as possible during challenging times. Telephone Befriending has the potential to be an important aspect of the overall approach to helping the most isolated and lonely individuals in our society. Telephone Befriending can also benefit the volunteer befrienders who are similarly able to reengage with their community and may derive health benefits from regular volunteering.

Our aim is to alleviate feelings of anxiety, loneliness and isolation that may be experienced by many people across our communities, by contact from a volunteer befriender.

If you’re a friendly person who likes talking to people, then this is the role for you.

What does a Volunteer Telephone Befriender do?

This is an exciting new service and we expect the following to form the main part of the telephone befriending role:

    • To telephone Befriendee’s at their home for around 10 -30 minutes. You will arrange the exact times of your future calls direct with the Befriendee’s. This could range from once a day to once a week, but individual needs will be matched with your availability (From 6 to 10 calls).
    • To provide a telephone conversation, a listening ear and chat about interests and hobbies, helping to alleviate loneliness and feelings of isolation.
    • To provide companionship and human interaction at a time when this may be limited.
    • To provide an update after each call to the Together Talks support Team. This is so we can keep a track of the amount of befriending calls each volunteer is undertaking, the type of support being offered during these calls and if there is anything further required.
    • It is important to note telephone befriending is not counselling or therapy and other services must be sought if this is required.

    ?Benefits

    • You will gain new and transferable skills. We offer support for you to increase your own job-readiness and personal development, by offering training opportunities, volunteering experience and detailed references.

    Additional Information

    We Are Pyxis CIC

Pyxis is a social enterprise set up to support 10-25 year olds who find themselves lonely, isolated, or in need of support with life and social skills.

Pyxis was born from the belief that young people who experience difficulty with social situations can improve them if given the right support. We believe that this contributes to them having independent lives, successful relationships and fulfilling careers.

Over time, we have come to the view that the best way to support these young people is to create spaces where they feel that they are safe and supported. Our focus has become about creating spaces for connection with other young people and professionals, in order to learn about themselves, each other, and the world around them. We think that supported by these relationships, young people can navigate what often feel like confusing and unmanageable challenges.

You can find out more about the projects we run at www.pyxis.life.
