Become a Community Organiser!

We are always looking for better ways to make your voice heard and after feedback from the 24/26 Union Council Cohort we are trialing out a new system in the 25/26 Academic Year. We want to hear your voices, priorities and campaigns clearer. From feedback we were told you would like:

Less formality.

  • Less being ‘talked at’ and more action.
  • Easier ways to get involved.

The new model is all about making things simpler, more inclusive and action-focused, by embodying a Community Organiser approach and moving away from bureaucracy towards community action. Community Organising focuses on addressing social injustices and using collective power to bring about positive change.

The Part-Time Officer role on Union Council will be replaced by Community Organisers. This is as we understand that Students come from a range of different backgrounds and an intersectional approach allows anyone from any background to work on issues that matter to them. We will also remove the elective system so anyone can become a Community Organiser without having to worry about campaigning for votes. We just want students who are passionate about issues that matter to them! Community Organisers will attend Union Council meetings which happen five times a year.

As a Community Organiser Student Representative your purpose will be to:

  • Represent students and the diverse student community.
  • Campaign on issues relevant to students and the community.
  • Work with the Full Time Officers and wider student body on issues relating to students.
  • Lead and support in planning key Liberation and History Months and community events e.g., Black History Month, LGBT+ History Month ensuring they are impactful and student-led.
  • Scrutinise the Full Time Officer Campaigns to ensure they are student-centric with their campaigns.
