At CCSU we care about your academic experience. With your Academic Life President we actively work with the university and our student volunteers to ensure you feel supported and have your say.

Each academic year, we recruit and train student volunteers to be Course Representatives and Course Mentors.

Course Representatives (Reps) are a community of students who have self-elected to represent their cohort, per year/level, across a host of courses.

As a Course Rep, you can expect to commit 10 hours a term to gathering feedback from students and presenting it to university staff at Student Voice Foras and Boards of Study meetings. Full details of the role are in the  Course Representative Handbook.

To become a Course Rep, we ask you to first sign up - staff may also Recommend a Rep  (both forms open in September 2026) - and then complete the online training and sign the Course Rep Code of Conduct and GDPR Agreement.

Course Mentoring is an opportunity to share your experience as a 2nd, 3rd year or postgraduate student with foundation and 1st year students seeking support with navigating Blackboard, accessing the Library and LibrarySearch, as well as preparing for lectures and seminars. A Course Mentor is purely for academic purposes, and does not provide pastoral support. However, should a student raise a concern related to their financial, physical, social and emotional wellbeing, our Mentors are equipped to signpost students in the right direction.

To ensure our Course Mentors are successful, we work closely with the Course Director to introduce our Mentors at the beginning of the academic year or following training. The Mentor and Course Director will then continue to work together, so that the Mentor can tailor their support to match module requirements and assessment deadlines.

Course Mentors will have ownership over how they provide group sessions for students, and can choose to do them as drop-ins, bookable sessions, or scheduling them with the help of the Course Director after lecturers and seminars.

There is no set hours to complete as a Mentor, with the role designed to fit around your own studies.
