Volunteering

Working in partnership with Citizens Advice Shepway, Money Matters Service seeks to help those experiencing high levels of debt.  We want to provide a service to help those in debt to free themselves of debt and improve their overall wellbeing, through a holistic perspective.

Money Matters is a partnership of well-known local non-profit organisations helping local people who are struggling with their finances to regain control.

Once a client has been signed onto the programme, a volunteer mentor will work with them to understand their main worries or anxieties and support them to prepare for their meeting with a qualified Money Adviser from Citizens Advice.  The Adviser will work with the client and the volunteer mentor to develop a ‘money advice plan’ (MAP).

The volunteer mentor will support and enable the client to work through the money advice plan towards a debt-free future.

Principle tasks:

• Once allocated a client, volunteers are asked to make contact with the client and arrange a budget meeting, in which clients will bring with them any documentation to their financial situation.  Budget meetings consist of a completing a pre-defined list of possible expenses and incomes, using the documentation to support the figures.

• To accompany clients to money advice appointments at Citizens Advice Shepway, to offer support and @a second set of ears'.
• To support and empower clients to progress through a 'Debt-journey action list', which entails several simple steps clients can make (with Mentor Support) to better their financial situation and work towards a debt solution.

• To complete outcome measure forms.
• To support clients in seeking help with other social issues that may be a cause/consequence of their financial situation.
