Volunteering

Whose Hoo (https://whosehoo.org.uk/) is a heritage and culture-based scheme, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which will run from 2025 to 2029. During those four years the scheme aims to create a lasting framework which empowers a wide range of stakeholders, including residents, schools, and landowners, to help current and future generations enjoy, learn from, and conserve this fascinating and important landscape. The scheme aims to:

Conserve, restore and celebrate the built and natural features that create the historic landscape character of the Hoo Peninsula​

Increase community participation in the natural and historic heritage of the Hoo Peninsula. ​Increase access to and learning about the landscape and heritage of the Hoo Peninsula

​Create connections across the Hoo Peninsula through meaningful volunteering.

A programme of hedgerow survey/management/restoration/replanting.  It will; reintroduce a disease resistant species of Elm as a hedgerow tree and at Four Elms Hill; provide support for landowners for good hedgerow management; promote the benefits of hedgerows amongst communities.

Partnered with the Volunteers from wHoo Cares, a community-based organisation with the vision to reduce social isolation and improve the health and well-being of people on the Hoo Peninsula (ME3 postcode), a large rural area of Medway, Kent. Since starting in 2016, wHoo Cares has focused on what is important to the individual, offering a range of support including befriending, transport to medical appointments or activities, accessible shopping bus, hosting group activities and practical support such as help completing local authority applications. wHoo Cares also runs a volunteer programme that utilises the abilities and skills of mainly local residents to deliver much of the ongoing support, whilst building communities. Over the last year with the help of their mascot Harry, wHoo Cares has provided over 18,000 hours of befriending services and at least 35,000 hours of support, saving the NHS thousands of pounds.
