Telephone Befriender

Keep Talking Services

Remote.

Keep Talking Services is a registered charity dedicated to reducing loneliness and supporting the mental health and well-being of people in our communities.

We provide telephone befriending to adults aged 18 and over who may be experiencing loneliness, social isolation and/or mental health difficulties. Our approach is simple: we believe in the power of meaningful human connection. Through regular telephone conversations, our volunteers provide companionship, a friendly listening ear and a non-judgemental space where people can feel heard, valued and connected.

Volunteers are expected to:

  • Make a weekly telephone call to their allocated client.
  • Listen without judgement and provide companionship and emotional support.
  • Build a trusting and consistent relationship with their client.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Complete call logs following their conversations.
  • Raise any concerns through the appropriate safeguarding or support procedures.
  • Engage with ongoing supervision and support.

Recruitment and training:

Students complete an application and screening call before being accepted as a volunteer. Once accepted, volunteers are required to complete a DBS check and mental health awareness training, delivered online by Alex, the founder of Keep Talking Services. We cover the cost of the DBS check.

Time commitment:

The core commitment is one hour per week for a regular telephone call with your allocated client, for a minimum commitment of six months.

Requirements:

No previous experience is required. The opportunity is open to students aged 18 or over studying a health and social care related degree.
