LGBTQ+ Society (Canterbury)

The LGBT+ Society is a 'safe space' society where we celebrate being part of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Other community and support one another. The society is not just limited to those within this category, we're open to and accepting of everybody, regardless of their identity. The '+' stands for those who don't necessarily fit a typical LGBT identity and is also inclusive of our straight allies, who are more than welcome to join! The Society is a safe and friendly environment in which students can come together without fear of being judged for being different.  Also the best part about our Society is that we’re more like a family. We’re different people from different places who have come together to make new friends and are willing to help whenever we can and just have a good time.

We run socials every week throughout term time with Camp Coffee, our sober social, running every Wednesday from 3pm in the Student Union’s Cafe. Our drinking socials occur fortnightly to coincide with Glitterbomb (gay night) at Steinbeck & Shaw. We also hope and aim to do more alternative socials, like bowling, pub crawls, and movie nights just to name a few. We know student life can get expensive, so we're open to your suggestions for socials and hope you can come up with some wonderful new ideas :) We also aim to do more joint socials with other societies. One of our biggest aims this year is to promote equality through educational events, such as putting on speeches and giving people a chance to ask questions in a safe, controlled environment.

Membership costs cover your ticket to Student Pride in London - A really fun day trip to London with lots of work related advice, plenty of freebies and a live stage with LGBT+ speakers and performers. If this isn't enough, these wristbands also cover entry to G-A-Y bar and club Heaven where we can dance the night away!

We also organise a variety of charity events and aim to do one each term. Previously, we had great success with a Burlesque night which was a charity event the LGBT+ Society organised to raise money for World AIDS Day. This night involved the contribution of various other societies to perform acts throughout the night as well as a top class burlesque act, The Tuttie Fruities. This night was hugely successful and great entertainment for everyone who attended whilst also raised money for an important charity so we hope to replicate this success this year.We have since had lots of stalls - Christmas sales, cake sales etc to raise money for LGBT+ and mental health charities.

If in doubt, come along and say hello or feel free to message anyone on committee - we're a friendly bunch who are always happy to help! We look forward to having you join us!
