Don't Burn Out: Stress Management Tips
University life at Christ Church is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. With deadlines, exams, and social commitments, it's easy to feel stretched too thin. Managing stress effectively is key to avoiding burnout and staying on top of your studies while maintaining your well-being. Here are some practical tips to help you stay balanced:
1. Prioritise and Plan
Keeping track of deadlines and assignments can help you stay organised. Use a planner or digital calendar to break tasks into manageable chunks and set realistic goals. This will help prevent last-minute deadline panic and reduce stress. The Learning Skills Hub at Christ Church offers workshops, study guides, and personalised academic mentoring to help you manage your workload effectively. Appointments can be booked with the Learning Skills Team both in person and online.
2. Take Breaks and Rest
Studying for hours on end can be counterproductive. Follow the Pomodoro technique—work for 25 minutes, then take a five-minute break. Longer breaks are also essential, so make time for activities you enjoy. Our Students’ Union regularly hosts social events, Give it a Go, and relaxation activities like arts and crafts sessions to help students unwind so make sure you keep an eye out on our website events page!
3. Stay Active
Exercise is a great stress reliever. Whether it’s a gym session at the Christ Church Sport Centre, joining a Sport Team, or hikes in Kent staying active can improve your mood and energy levels. Physical activity helps to reduce stress hormones like cortisol, leading to a calmer and more balanced emotional state.
4. Get Enough Sleep
Pulling all-nighters might seem necessary, but lack of sleep affects concentration, memory, and mood. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to stay refreshed and focused.
5. Eat Well and Stay Hydrated
Your brain needs fuel to function. Avoid excessive caffeine and junk food, and instead opt for nutritious meals (Max's previous Campaign, Got Enough On Your Plate? Offers healthy eating tips!) Check out the heat-and-eat spaces on campus that provide microwaves and hot water so you can bring in food from home. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is also essential for maintaining energy levels and focus—there are free water refill stations across campus to keep you hydrated.
6. Talk About It
If stress is becoming overwhelming, don’t suffer in silence. Talk to friends, family, or university support services. Canterbury Christ Church University offers free counselling and mental health support—visit the Wellbeing Team in Augustine House or book an appointment through the student portal.
7. Set Boundaries
Balancing academics, part-time work, and social life can be tricky. Learn to say no when needed, and avoid overcommitting yourself.
8. Engage in Relaxing Activities
Hobbies, meditation, or even just listening to music can help reduce stress. Why not visit Augustine House Library’s StressLess team for some relaxing mindfulness sessions. There are also stress-busting activities offered by the Students Union such as puppy therapy, crafternoons or film nights. A strong support network can make a huge difference. Surround yourself with positive, supportive friends and don’t isolate yourself when things get tough. Attending student socials, societies, networking events, and volunteering opportunities can also help you build lasting connections.
