A farewell from Maddy

Today marks the end of Maddy Young's 2 years as a Sabbatical Officer at CCSU.

Today marks the end of Maddy Young's two years as a Sabbatical Officer at Christ Church Students' Union so here are a few words from her:

Thank you!!

Starting as a Sabbatical officer within a COVID-19 year was certainly something I had not signed up for… two years on, I am really pleased with the amount we have achieved.

Some of my highlights include:

  • Online charity events and training to keep communities connected throughout Covid-19.
  • BRIT2021 Challenge.
  • Whilst there was no student sporting activity it meant we were able to focus on developing club sport:
  • I worked closely with estates and facilities to start improving the sporting facilities, including repainting and decorating Stodmarsh.
  • Then the biggest project over my two years has been the membership model. Lots of research, proposals and student feedback went into developing a new membership model for student sport.
  • The return of club sport after COVID-19.
  • During the year, we ran many campaigns such as mental health and physical health, this girl can, Litter pick competitions and also a campaign for Sport Back on the Canterbury Campus.
  • The set up of ‘Cool Down Thursday’ - an event to encourage students, in particular sports students to talk to a Wellbeing advisor if needed.
  • The start of Friday morning fitness for sports clubs.
  • Finally we were allowed a physical Freshers Fayre, Sports Federation dinner and Varsity. It was important to reestablish these events and they were all a huge success. It was SO nice to finally see students back out and enjoying themselves.
  • Lastly, I have really enjoyed being a BUCS student Rep for the South East Region and I am very happy to have been nominated for the Unsung hero award.

Being a part of Team Christ Church is so much more than just playing on a Wednesday. It’s about the people you meet, it’s about representing the crest, it’s about being a part of something.

I have had the best 5 years at Christ Church University and I am so grateful for everyone that has been a part of my journey.

I am now handing over to Max Elvin - who I have absolutely no doubt will do a fantastic job!

Thank you all again.

Lots of love,
