Students who were moving out of halls were encouraged to donate their unwanted items to the British Heart Foundation.
Over the summer we were encouraging students who were moving out of halls to donate their unwanted items such as clothes, electricals, books and furniture to the British Heart Foundation collection banks (the big red boxes) on campus and at the halls of residences.
Prior to the campaign Amanda Purkiss, British Heart Foundation Regional Stock Generator, said: “Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, shattering the lives of too many children, parents and grandparents – you can join the fight for every heartbeat by having a clear out and donating your unwanted things.”
The donated items — which would otherwise likely have ended up in landfill — were taken to British Heart Foundation (BHF) charity shops, where they were sold on to make money.
Guess what? It's all been tallied up and students at Canterbury Christ Church University have raised £8,792 for the British Heart Foundation, which will go towards research to beat heart disease for good.
Jamie Harris, President (Wellbeing) at Christ Church Students' Union said: "Thank you to everyone who kindly donated their unwanted items which firstly raised money for a good cause but also reduced the volume of waste entering landfill."
