West African Society

With a steady growing number of international students studying here in Kent, West African students make up one of the highest percentage of international students. Therefore, we are dedicated to creating a platform to support the West African student body. This will be achieved by creating a space where students from West African backgrounds can feel a sense of belonging, ensuring seamless integration into their university experience and Canterbury life. We aim to encourage cultural expression, boost interaction and empower the students. One of our other agendas is to bring people together socially and encourage our society members to give back to the community. We aim to do so by involving ourselves in charitable events such as the below:

Kent “Africa cup of nations”

This will be a friendly football match hosted by the West African society, allowing members and non-members to represent their countries. The contributions that will be raised on the day (food, clothing, money etc), will be sent as aid to the country that wins the match.

Africa Aid Project

With the help of the University, one of the projects we aim to execute by the end of the next academic year, would be to send a team from the society to a deprived area in Africa, to provide help with surgeries, schools, providing textbooks and other educational materials, water systems, orphanages amongst other undertakings. We have accounted for the fact that this project will require a large financial investment therefore, we will create a GoFundMe page that will be open to anyone both within the university and the community.

West African Countries Independence Day

An event for West African Countries Independence Day in October which is yet to be planned and discussed within the team.
