President (Sports) Blog

President of the Week!

There are so many amazing and committed members representing our #TeamChristChurch sports family that I wanted to hightlight them with this PRESIDENT OF THE WEEK feature. It's not always an easy job, requiring lots of time, dedication and organisation so its important that these leaders are recognised! #CCSULeaders

So lets find out more about...

Laura Reilly -  Athletics President

Having started training at the age of 11, I am currently a member of Sutton and District AC, with my preferred event being the 100m hurdles.

In 2009, I joined my training group coached by Marina Armstrong and remained with her until coming to University. With her, I moved up age groups and distances from 75m to 80m and finally to 100m hurdles. She also helped me to drastically reduce my times over each season. My best achievement to date is reaching the English Schools semi-final in 2012. I have also medalled at both the indoor and outdoor Surrey Country Champs since 2012, becoming the U20 women’s 100m hurdle champion in 2014.

I now work closely with, Jake Green’s coach, June Plews in Canterbury and follow her plans under the guidance of Judy Vernon. Both June and Judy have helped me to not only improve my hurdling technique but also my flat running form. This summer I qualified to run at the England Athletics Championships in Bedford.

Away from the track, I have made sure to make the most of the offered sports scholar workshops, whereby I have gained knowledge in nutrition, social media training, sports psychology and strength and conditioning. The latter was my favourite and I am looking forward to working with Sports Lab in the future to further improve my performance.

My aim, in my last year at Christ Church and president of Athletics & Cross Country, is to improve my own performance in regard to being more powerful and aggressive. Also, with lots of fresh talent added to our established members, I am looking forward to seeing how the year develops with the Athletics and Cross Country Team.
