Sports Memberships

Here is an outline of all the possible memberships that we have on offer for Team Christ Church members:

Standard Membership

The Standard Membership option essentially entails full membership of a CCSU Sports Club for the full academic year. As outlined in the New Membership model, the core membership includes:

  • Essential equipment related to Health and Safety

  • First aid training for two members/team

  • First aid kits for the academic year

  • Transport to BUCS away games/primary competitions (if not in BUCS) (with the option to opt out of this provision)

  • Affiliation to BUCS/comp entry

  • Essential affiliation (to National Governing Bodies if required)

  • Central support costs from the Union - staffing, representation, administration, insurance

  • Training for committees.

  • Central support costs from the University - training and home matches facilities, coaches, administration

  • Varsity costs

  • Contingency fund

You need to ensure that you have paid for your Club Membership by Wednesday 11th October, in order to be able to compete in the first round of BUCS fixtures. In order to purchase this membership you must be a fully registered CCCU student.

Standard Membership (Two Instalments)

If your Club’s Standard Membership is over £100, you can have the option of paying in two instalments. The first of these needs to be paid by Wednesday 11th October, the second of these then needs to be paid by the first round of fixtures following the Christmas break (late January). In order to purchase this membership you must be a fully registered CCCU student.

Semester/Injured Membership

A semester membership option is now available to those looking to join a Team Christ Church Club under exceptional circumstances. These memberships shall be available to those who:

  • Are only at CCCU for one term of study (i.e. Erasmus students)

  • Begin their course of study with the University in January

This option shall be available at 50% of the full membership price of the individual sports team in question (i.e. an eligible student for a Swimming Semester membership would pay £30.00, as opposed to the standard full membership fee of £60.00)

Also under this new criteria fully-paid members of a Team Christ Church Club shall be able to claim a 50% refund on their original membership fee if:

  • They suffer an injury that leaves them unable to play for the second academic term

Please note that semester memberships shall not be available to existing club participants who have failed to pay their full membership from the previous term. All students (excluding one-term Erasmus students) who have participated in sporting club activity in the first academic term are required to pay full Team Christ Church Club membership. Any individual that has failed to do so shall be banned from participation in the activity of the respective sports team for the rest of the year, effective immediately. This is to ensure that individual clubs have sufficient funds to enable their activity throughout the year.

All applications for both semester membership and partial refunds are subject to approval by the CCSU Activities Coordinator. Proof of your exceptional circumstance is required during any application process (i.e. doctor’s note regarding an injury, course documentation and/or letter from lecturer for Erasmus students).

Training Membership

A Training Membership option is available to Clubs upon request. A Training Membership would allow the purchaser to be able to train and participate in most Club activities. However with this membership option you cannot compete in BUCS matches for the University. In order to purchase this membership you must be a fully registered CCCU student. Clubs Committees are able to set the Membership Fee upon agreement by the President (Sports).

Social Memberships

A Social Membership option is available to Clubs upon request. A Social Membership would allow the purchaser to be a member of the Club, but not be able to participate in any of the physical activity within the Club (i.e. training, BUCS matches, local league matches). Therefore Social Members would be able to attend Club meetings, social activities and the Sports Federation Dinner event. In order to purchase this membership you must be a fully registered CCCU student. Clubs Committees are able to set the Membership Fee upon agreement by the President (Sports). Upon setting the Social Membership fee please take into account that VAT has to be extracted from each fee, so you should set the fees at a price which would accommodate this.

Multiple Memberships

In previous years CCCU students purchasing Standard Memberships for multiple Clubs received a 50% discount for the second (or more) memberships. Unfortunately due to the nature of the New Sports Club Membership Model where the membership fees are set by splitting the cost of Club activity equally across their members, this option is no longer available. However as this could lead to significant upfront costs for members looking to participate in multiple sports, we have allocated two payment options to try and accommodate this:

  1. Students can pay 50% for both memberships each semester. For example, joining Hockey (Women’s) you would pay £43.50 and for Rugby (Women’s) you would pay £54 both in October and in January.

  2. If you have already purchased the Standard Membership for one Club, you could pay the second Club membership in January. For example, if you have paid £87.00 for Hockey (Women’s), you would not need to pay the £108.00 for Rugby (Women’s) until January.

Please note that these arrangements must be authorised by the President (Sports) and the Activities Coordinator on an individual basis before confirmation of this.

Associate Memberships

Associate Membership is available to (subject to performance trials as outlined by the Club Committee):

  • Alumni of Canterbury Christ Church University;

  • Staff of Canterbury Christ Church University;

  • Students from other institutions;

People shall only be considered Members if they have paid their membership for that academic year.

Associate Membership would allow the purchaser to take part in Club training, compete in local league fixtures and attend social events. However Associate Members cannot compete in BUCS fixtures or vote in Committee Elections.

Associate Membership fees have to be set at a higher rate than the Full Standard Membership fee of the Club. This is down to the fact that as a charity we subsidise the activity of our members, and any people external to this should not receive the same benefits. Committees are able to set the Membership Fee upon agreement by the President (Sports) and subject to the above criteria.
