What is Union Council?

Here at Christ Church we have a democratic structure called Union Council which proposes, debates and decides policy for the Union. The Council meets at least 5 times a year and makes really important decisions that can really change the lives of Students. The Council also runs campaigns to change things for the better of the student experience and the community, and to create awareness about issues which matter to you.

What does a member of Union Council do?

Purpose

  • Represent the student demographic you were elected to - e.g. women, part-time, BAME, student reps, Medway etc.

  • Campaign on issues relevant to the students you represent.

  • Work with the Sabbatical Leadership Team and wider student body on issues relating to the students you represent.

  • To positively contribute to address other issues relating to the wider student experience as a Union Council officer.

You will:

  • Ensure your work is influenced by student needs and opinion.

  • Represent and engage with students of all types of study at all campuses.

  • Work with and support your team of fellow Union Council Officers.

  • Be ready and willing to accept actions from Union Council and engage positively in the scrutiny process.

  • Run campaigns alongside your fellow Officers, raising awareness of issues affecting students.

You might:

  • Engage with local and national campaigns and bodies.

  • Attend NUS National Conference.

  • Collaborate with relevant student societies to run events for students.
