Updated guidance for sports and society events



Dear CCSU Clubs and Societies,

As you know, the government has imposed a second national lockdown in England from 5th November. You can read the Union’s statement on this here. Unfortunately, the new restrictions mean that it is no longer possible to meet indoors with anyone who is not in your household, with the exception of attending face to face, scheduled teaching. Outdoor gatherings are also banned, with the exception that you can exercise in a public outdoor space with either your household, or one person that you do not live with. As such, no physical club sport or society activities can take place until the current restrictions are lifted. All club or society activity must be undertaken virtually for the remainder of Semester One, with no mixing of households in any physical space. We know that lots of clubs and societies have run a diverse range of virtual events successfully already, and we encourage you to continue to do so. There is a short virtual checklist to complete to ensure your event is safe and inclusive: please submit this at least two working days before any official club or society event.

As Sports Club membership fees have been based upon Semesters for this academic year, we will reimburse all Semester One membership fees back to those members that have already paid them. Please note that any costs that have already been incurred (i.e. equipment, debt from 19/20, additional sessions up until 5th November, other) will be factored into Semester Two payments for your Clubs. However please note that we will provide students with the opportunity to break down their Semester Two membership payments into two instalments across the Semester so that this is still manageable for you. 

As Society memberships are annual fees (as opposed to Semester Memberships as is the case with Sports Clubs), these will remain in place for the time being. However, in the unfortunate circumstance that your activity should be further disrupted into Semester Two, there will be the opportunity for membership rebates for outstanding funds that have not already been used by the Society. We will discuss this with society committees when it is clearer what activity can take place in Semester Two.

We know this will be disappointing news for you all, but we hope that this period of lockdown will reduce the spread of the virus so that activity can start to take place again as soon as safely possible.
