What to expect from Freshers’ Week 2020

Christ Church Students’ Union believe that university isn’t just about getting a degree.  Meeting people, enjoying new experiences, learning new skills, and making memories are just as important.

We know that new and returning students are starting to look ahead to September wanting to know what they can expect from Freshers’ Week, and whilst it’s going to be a bit different, we are committed to helping to make this a positive and fun experience so you can make the most of your time here.

Things will be different

Due to COVID-19 and social distancing we’re having to rethink how we run events as it’s just not possible to safely do the events and activities we have run in previous years.

The safety of the Christ Church community is our primary concern, we know there are many of you who do not currently feel comfortable being in close proximity to others right now.  So, we will have a mixture of mass online events and smaller physical events which allow for social distancing. Larger in-person events are currently on hold and in constant review in accordance with Government guidance.

What’s planned

Students’ unions around the country are all having to adapt, and over the past few months we’ve been talking with dozens of other SU’s so we can share ideas and best practice.  There will be Freshers’ Week, but we want to first emphasise that these activities are for all students at Canterbury Christ Church University, not just those starting in September.  So it doesn’t matter if you’re coming straight from A-levels, have children or dependents, or are a distance learner, etc. we want to ensure you are all able to feel part of the Christ Church community.

We may have been physically apart over the past few months but this period has enabled us to connect with so many students and we are confident in using what we’ve learnt to put together a calendar of online and on-campus events and activities for the start of the academic year which we aim to publish by mid-August, allowing you to plan and get excited about your start at, or return to, Christ Church.

We are also happy to confirm that we will be holding our Virtual Freshers’ Fayre on Wednesday 23rd September, giving an opportunity to explore and connect with student clubs and societies, as well as finding out what else your students’ union has to offer.

We’re looking forward to September!

This academic year will be slightly different, but we’re confident that we can make this Freshers’ even more inclusive than before.  Your students’ union is here to help you make new friends, try new things, have fun, and settle-in and we can’t wait to welcome you to Christ Church.

Keep connected
