Way back in 2012 Christ Church Students’ Union relocated off Canterbury campus and into the St. George’s Centre but if we’re being honest we missed the campus vibe and so we’ve got good news.... We’re coming back baby!
Moving back onto campus
Yes, this September 2023 will see your Students’ Union moving onto campus, taking over an area in the Anselm building, with a variety of offices, meeting rooms, and most importantly social areas to help us deliver a range of activities, events, and services on campus.
“The Students’ Union and University are working together to create a vibrant space for students to study, socialise, and relax and it will be nothing like any of the existing student spaces at the University. It’s so important for the Students’ Union to be at the heart of our campuses as it enables us to best support and represent our members.” - Dan Bichener, Students’ Union President 2021-23
Building works are currently underway but we wanted to share some images to give you an idea of what to expect when students return for the new academic year.
Wait there's more
Oh, and we’re not finished there as we’re also happy to announce a dedicated space for sports and physical activities on campus with the removal of some of the portacabins on the Moore space.
We lost the use of our tennis courts on campus back in 2007 and restarted our campaign to get them back in 2021, so it’s great to get a dedicated multi-use games area (MUGA) that will feature tennis, netball, football, and basketball courts.
“I'm so excited?to see this project finish in time for new students joining us in September, and the positive impact it will have on our Student Community - for both our sporting members, as well as students who are just looking to socialise, destress and have fun” - Max Elvin, President Engagement and Sports 2022-24
A look back at our history
Heading back to campus has got us a little nostalgic so we’ve had a delve into the archives to show the homes of Christ Church Students’ Union over the past 60 years.
1962 - Anselm
The students' union was initially based in what is now the Staff Common Room (SCR) which is directly below the Food Court.
1965 - Erasmus
A few years later and the SU move to the Erasmus building and the photos and video below are from the early 1980s.
1985 - Maxwell Davies
The students’ union moved to what is now Maxwell Davies, with a bar and offices on the ground floor and games,TV rooms and offices on the first floor.
2012 - St. George's Centre
We moved into the custom build St. George’s Centre, with halls of residence, a bar, cafe, and offices. The site was formerly a Netto supermarket with the Studio 41 nightclub and Planet Lazer on the top floor before it was demolished.
2023 - Anselm
We're moving back onto campus! This will be coupled with a complete rebrand of Christ Church Students' Union, so we can't wait for September! And we promise it's going to look so much nicer than the photo below!
