Following on from blogs by Biba and Nick I thought it would be good to share what I’ve been up to since I took office as Union President in early July.
Training
It’s been great going to various training sessions around the country with are run by the National Union of Students (NUS). Not only have I learnt a lot but I also got to meet lots of officers from other students’ unions who I continue to chat to and get advice on various student issues.
Students’ Union App
One of my main points on my elections manifesto was for us to get a Students’ Union App and I’m pleased to say that this is going to happen! Watch this space!
Library
Another key point in my manifesto was 24 hour library opening and more computers and I’ve met with the Head of Library Services to start discussions on these points. I know it’s not going to be straight-forward fix but talks have been positive so far.
Student Employability
I’ve been working with careers to improve the existing employability workshops run by the University to make them more engaging and interactive as well as better advertised so that more more students take part.
Students Spaces on Campus
The majority of student spaces on campus are commercial so I’ve been speaking with the Estates & Facilities department into finding alternative spaces for you to use where you don’t feel obliged to buy something. Let me know what you think and any suggestions you have.
Teaching Excellence Framework
As well as the above I have also contacted Julian Brazier (Canterbury MP) to try and get his support us and our disapproval of the proposed Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and it’s link to potential tuition fees rises.
Freshers Freshers Freshers
A final point for this blog is that we have Freshers’ Week coming up so there’s been a lot of prep for this and ensuring that students at Canterbury, Medway and Broadstairs all get a good experience. I’ll be visiting you all in September so come and say hello.
